Day 29
The Gills are at Rotherham today - a trip I remember well from last year! I'd driven all the way there, with Hugo, Stef and Dan in the car - Craig had driven up as well, and we both pulled into this pub car park just in time for opening (11:00!!). I was a long old trip - about 3 hours - and our thirst's were in need of quenching - I don't think I'll ever forget the look on the barman's face when I offered him a £20 note for a round of seven drinks - said he, in a broad Yorkshire accent, "By-eck lad, we don't see many of those up here - you're flush today" - how strange! The round only cost me £7.50 too, so I wasn't going to grumble!
And the pinball machine (quoted on a sticker) "now accepts the new 50p coin" - just how backwards are these northerners??? But a great day was had by all - we drew 1-1, then headed into Sheffield to catch the England game, and back down to London for a couple of late drinkies! A real long-day, but one of the best away-trips of the entire season, in my opinion!
This time round, the result was the same - but I don't remember if I got up early-enough to listen to it - the earliest memory I have of last Saturday is coming off the freeway at about 11:00, and seeing "Disneyland" staring me in the face - yes, today was my first visit to a Disney resort! $47 (each) later, and with the choice of the traditional Disneyland Park, and the new Disney's Californian Adventure, a long day was ahead of us!
I've always wanted to go to a Disney resort - the one here in Anaheim is the original park - I remember being younger and sending off for the free video (from the TV adverts) hoping one day I'd make it. Florida is the main resort - it's huge apparently, and it's where everyone wants to go - but I've always wanted to come here, the place where the "Magic Began".
Don't really know how to describe Disneyland - I suppose it's a town-sized Disney Store with some added attractions. That's about it really! The shops sell everything, the rides and attractions are cool, and the atmosphere is superb - definitely a place to bring the family, especially if you've got kids - not the place for a loutish lager-fest (sorry Hugo!). Well worth the entry-fee too, even though five of the major rides were closed - a) it's out of season, and b) someone was killed on the Thunder Mountain ride a couple of weeks ago, so they're still investigating that one I guess!
And I went on the roller-coaster - California Screamin'! Now, for those of you who don't know, I HATE roller-coasters, with a passion! In fact, there's not really one fairground ride that excites me - not even the tea-cups! But I've gotta say, I loved it - shame there weren't any more, but I know there's a whole park a couple of hours drive away, which is roller-coaster heaven - Six Flags Magic Mountain - Jem and I are going to give it a go!
Bloody knackered now - spent most of the day trudging around - so off to bed. Have to pack in the morning, as we're leaving the Marriott - aaah! Still, cleaners wont be too happy, as I intend to leave them a little surprise!!!
